Below is an E Mail from Richard Johson 6th July 2009:
The 2009 RYA Multi Class Regatta, is being held at Rutland from Friday August 14th to Sunday August 16th.

Once again, there are some great prizes to be won, including sailing kit, chandlery vouchers, DVDs and much more. There is also a Regatta Dinner with an exciting cabaret starring Sara Coleman, for which all competitors will be given a complimentary ticket courtesy of RYA Sailability. On Friday night, the Opening Ceremony will be presented by some very special guests from the world of sailing and it will be followed by a barbeque. There will also be some eminent guests at the prizegiving on Sunday, including Geoff Holt who, in 2007, circumnavigated Britain in a Challenger.

Please send your entry form to the Rutland Sailing Club office (address on the form) by the beginning of August but don't send money - the subsidised entry fee is paid at registration on Thursday 13th or Friday 14th.

If you have any friends or colleagues in your fleet who would like to compete but don't have an entry form, please pass these attachments on to them and remind them of the dates so that they remember to complete the paperwork in time.

See you at Rutland

Multiclass Regatta 2008 is a roaring success

RYA Sailability held its second annual multiclass regatta at Rutland Sailing Club on 8, 9 and 10 August. After last year’s resounding success, a huge amount of work, particularly from event organiser Richard Johnson, went into making the regatta possible again in 2008.

This is the only regatta of its kind in disabled sailing, bringing together all the different types of accessible boats and the 175 Sailability groups from around the UK for three days of sailing and socialising.

The regatta kicked off with the registration of over 80 competitors and 60 boats which hit the water despite rain and force 4 winds. The classes competing were the 2.4, the Access 2.3, 303 and Liberty, The Martin 16, Squibs, Challenger and the Paralympics class SKUD 18. After two races back-to-back in nearly three hours of highly competitive sailing, the participants came off the water in time for the official opening. Sailability Manager Debbie Blachford opened the weekend with words of encouragement and gave her gratitude for the continued support of the three main sponsors of the event - The National Sports Foundation, The Fawcett Trust and RYA Sailability.

Pat Dodd, Chairperson of RYA Sailability also said how proud she was that RYA Sailability was a supporter and funder of such events: “These events are a perfect showcase of what can be achieved by the fundraising of RYA Sailability Trust. We will continue to work hard so that Debbie and her team have the availability of funds in the future to continue the great work in RYA Sailability and to continue to increase the number of people involved in disabled sailing in the UK.”  A barbecue for all participants ended the first day, giving everyone the chance to socialise and swap valuable information about their individual Sailability groups.

Four races took place on the second day, in consistent rain and often overpowering wind. The racing, by determined sailors, was very close and only a few competitors were forced to retire. The results for the two-day fleet racing were announced, and prizes awarded, during the gala dinner for 150 people (including the sailors, helpers, race co-ordinators and carers). The meal was wonderful and the atmosphere full of fun.

Sunday started with a few sore heads but much excitement surrounding the 120-minute pursuit race. The wind was a strong force five and if there has ever been any question about the level of competitiveness in disabled sailing the sailors who went out on Sunday have now dispelled it! The boats were being tested to their limit - and the sailors with them - but it seemed that unless your boat was broken or turned over you kept going! It was a truly inspiring sight and it was nearly two and a half hours before everyone came ashore.

Special guests arrived to hand out the prizes donated by Laser, Harken, Purple Marine and Sunseeker. Richard Langford, Chairman of RYA, congratulated everyone on their contribution to the weekend: “I am a member of Rutland Sailing Club and looking at the weather today it would have taken a lot for me to have gone out”, he said, “so to see the numbers on the water today was inspiring.” Richard presented prizes to the winner of the Challenger class, John Draper, and to the Access 2.3 winner Clare Andrew, Access303 winner Paul Holzerr and Access Liberty winner Bill Mitchell.

Pauline Harrison of IFDS presented a prize to Chris Atkin, who won the Martin 16 class, and her husband Ian Harrison, former president of IFDS, awarded one to Nick Birrell, winner of the SKUD 18 class and a member of Team GB in Beijing.

Alison Gunn, a visually impaired newcomer to racing and one of RYA Sailability’s regional organisers, was delighted with her win in the Squib class. Megan Pascoe, who also represented Great Britain in the Paralympics, won the 2.4 class. Both were awarded their prizes by Nick Heyworth, manager of Parasport.

Sue Ellis, widow of former RYA Chairman Ken Ellis, kindly presented the Ken Ellis trophy to the champion of champions, the winner of the pursuit race, John Draper of the Challenger class. John is also a member of the Transition squad and was delighted with his win, promising to come back next year to defend his title.

In her closing remarks, Debbie Blachford thanked all who attended and helped make the weekend such a success. In particular she thanked Rutland Sailing Club for providing not only the most fantastic facilities and catering but the most willing helpers and volunteers. She also confirmed that, due to the continued support of the sponsors, the Multiclass Regatta will be held again on 14, 15 and 16 August 2009. See you there!
